2011 Nimby Fifty - Key Racer Info & Reminders

Posted on May 25, 2011

Hello NIMBY Fifty Racer!

Now that the Canucks are in the Stanley Cup Final (wohoooo!), let the count down to race day begin! We could not be more excited and we hope you are too. Here's a few things you should know in preparation for Saturday:

Racer Check-in

Pre-race check in is mandatory for all racers. Check-in opens at 8 am and closes at 10 am. Please bring a photo ID to check-in - the insurance people require us to ask to see it. Cycling BC and UCI members please also bring your ID card.

Day-of Registration

There are still a few spots left to register. Online reg ($60) closes Friday at 12 noon, while day-of registration will be available until 10am ($70 plus insurance). Don't be late!

Race Start

Race starts at 11 am, sharp!

The Course

The course is in great shape. There's new bridges on Waco Connector and Radio Tower, and tonnes of work has been done buffing many of the other trails on the course. With all the rain recently things aren't too dusty (yet) either!

Race Etiquette

Regardless of how competitive you are or not, this is a bike race. Please be respectful to one another out there on the course. If you want to get by another racer, be patient, let them know you're there, and where and when you intend to pass.  If someone wants to get by, let them once it's safe for you to move over, then get back to enjoying your ride.

Feed Zones

There is one stocked feedzone / aid station located at the Paraglide launch, it is not open to support crews. Please see the website for more details and directions to the designated support crew feed zone (feed zone #2): http://www.nimbyfifty.com/race-details/feed-zones/

Riding on the Road - Race Start

At the start, we'll have Hwy 99 closed off in both directions, and a vehicle leading out the pack at a moderate pace. There will be ample passing opportunities once you hit the gravel road climb, so please keep it safe and relaxed when pack riding on the road.

Riding on the Road - Race Finish

Near the end of the race, you will be riding the same stretch of pavement you did at the beginning. At this point you must obey all rules of the road.

There is a stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 99 and Old Pemberton Farm Road (the paved road you'll be on after you cross the railway tracks).   Please obey that stop sign. If the flagger waves you ahead, you're in luck, you can just roll right through. If they ask you to stop or slow down please do so. We will have members of the Fire Department on Hwy 99 at this intersection to stop and slow down vehicles, however, the highway will not be closed. While on the road, ride safely and be aware of your surroundings.

Finally, keep your head up and look for the large Nimby Fifty sign pointing you to turn Right into North Arm Farm. Once you enter, you'll ride back along the Farm driveway (stay to your right) toward the finish, which is right around the corner.

Race Proceeds & the PVTA

All proceeds from this year's race will be donated to the Pemberton Valley Trails Association (PVTA) and Pemberton Search And Rescue.  Please consider donating to the PVTA and/or becoming a member. At $10/year it's the cheapest trails organization membership around - help us help the PVTA in maintaining and building great trails in Pemberton.  Check out http://pembertontrails.com/membership/ for more info and to buy a membership.

Weather Forecast

The forecast is for "variably cloudy" conditions Saturday with a 30% chance of showers and 17 degrees. This should keep the course in nice tacky shape and the temps cool enough to ensure you don't overheat climbing up Big Nimby.

Mini-Nimby Kids Race

We've got a bike race planned for kids age 6 and under happening at 4pm. Bring your own bike run-bike/training wheel bike and we'll do a category for each. This will be a small lap course on the grass at North Arm. No timing, everyone's a winner!

Awards & Swag Prizing

We will start the awards for overall race and category winners at 3:30pm along with some swag prizing. The remaining swag prizing and category winner awards will be given out following the kids race, which takes place at 4pm.

Apres

Papa Josh is back to crank out the funk-tastic tunes for y'all after the race, and the fine folks from Western Promises Food will be there preparing fresh, gourmet salads and one of the best burgers you will ever eat (handmade veggie version available as well) for racers and volunteers.

Racers, your meal and first beer is included with your entry.  Additional beers will be available for $3.  Yes, that cheap. Please drink responsibly. If you drink, do not drive.

Western Promises will also have limited quantities of additional meals available for purchase for families and support members. You can buy extra meal tickets inside at the North Arm Cafe/Bakery for $12 taxes in. You, your support crew and spectators can also buy a variety of other meals, snacks and beverages from inside at the North Arm bakery/cafe. No one should leave hungry!

There will also be limited supplies of free hot dogs and juice for the kids!

While there will be plenty of lawn space, we'd also recommend bringing a camping chair if you'd like to sit in a more civilized manner after the race while downing your beer.

North Arm Farm

North Arm Farm, our start/finish area, is private property. It also happens to be the Mayor of Pemberton's own back yard. So please be sure to thank Jordan & Trish if you happen to meet or know them, as we'd really like to be invited back next year.  Now this may seem rather obvious, but we'll say it anyway: please be respectful to their land and use the porta-potties (or washrooms located inside the cafe) do not use the fields or bushes.

If you like pies and pastries you're in for a treat, you can purchase these freshly baked goods inside the bakery/cafe right there at North Arm along with coffee and other wholesome local food including in-season fresh veggies, preserves and Pemberton beef.

Discounts for Racers at Different Bikes

Different Bikes wants to reward you for your amazing race effort! Bring your race plate into any of the Different Bikes locations up until June 15th and receive 20% off clothing, parts and accessories. You truly are all winners in our eyes!

Go Canucks!

Have a great race, and see you all Saturday!
